Presence on Molokai: Contained but widespread within the areas of Kualapu’u, Ho’olehua, and Pala’au. More recently detected in Maunaloa.
BBTV has not yet been detected in East Molokai



Identification/Description
- Robust, fast-growing thistle that can grow to 2-6 feet tall
- It has purple flowers (1.5″ to 2″ long) that are surrounded by long spines.
- Its shiny green leaves have distinctive white veins, which give them a mottled appearance
- The wavy leaf margin is covered in spiny edges
MoMISC intervention
BBTV is not a priority target for eradication. While MoMISC’s field response and control for BBTV have been scaled back, public awareness and education efforts continue.
How can you help stop the spread of BBTV on Molokai?
- Do not move banana plants, plant parts, or planting materials such as mulch from one area of the island to another.
- Learn to identify signs and symptoms and inspect your plants often.
- Spread the word and help to educate family
